Hi! I’m Charla. I received my education degree from ACU, and this site is where I share experiences plus tips and techniques gathered in my 26 years of teaching in Texas (plus 30 years of doing private tutoring and teaching children’s Bible classes). My certifications include Elementary Ed, Mentally Retarded, English as a Second Language, and Psychology. I’ve also taught Gifted & Talented classes for first and second grades. With special education, I’ve taught self contained classrooms teaching children with autism, down syndrome, etc. I’ve loved all of my students no matter what class I was teaching.
I’ve taught first and second grades (mostly first grade), first and second grade bridge classes for two years, self-contained special ed classes which varied between grades K-4 (PALS), students with learning disabilities in a Resource Room, Early Childhood, ESL students in a total ESL school, and Gifted & Talented students. Throughout the years, I have taught hundreds of students and tutored nearly 50 students, ages ranging from four years old to college age. Through all of this experience, I still feel like I have a lot to learn and by no means do I feel like an expert in any area. I’m still learning! By sharing my experiences, though, maybe you can find something helpful to use in your teaching experience. And I would love for you to share ideas with me!
I got to meet Temple Grandin and get her autograph after hearing her speak. She was amazing! She spoke two sessions that morning, and my husband and I were at her second session. A book signing was in between the two sessions and another one after the second session. I know she must have been exhausted but she didn’t let it show during her speaking. I asked her what she would recommend, and she said to read her book, Different…Not Less.
Please leave a comment if you would like to share a teaching idea with me, or would like to see some topic covered on either of my sites. I also like to learn from other people and hear about their teaching experiences! If you have any tips you would like to share, I would love to hear them. If you would like to submit an idea or article, I would be glad to consider posting it on How to Teach Kids. I would really love to hear from you!
My other site is Healthyhomeblog.com and I would enjoy having you visit me there as well.
